Who is a traffic controller?
A traffic controller is a person accredited under the Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme authorised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to control traffic with a stop/slow bat at:

Road worksites where a road closure or part road closure is necessary, or
-
Other events on the road where a road closure or part road closure is necessary, or
-
Other circumstances where traffic control is required on a roadway
To become an accredited Traffic Controller in Queensland you are required to successfully complete an approved traffic controller training course delivered by a TMR approved training provider and meet the following criteria:

Minimum 18 years of age;

Have held a drivers license for a continuous period of 12 months within the past 5 years;

Complete a Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme Application, declaring your offence history, your medical fitness and your training qualifications.
It is also a pre-requisite for a Traffic Controller working on a construction site (e.g. a roadway) to hold a White Card / Blue Card (Construction Safety Induction Card). To find out more or to enrol, click here.
Traffic Controller Training Course Content
The course is comprised of four (4) elements:

Plan and prepare (e.g. select tools and equipment to carry out tasks that are consistent with the requirements of the job; check them for serviceability and rectify or report any faults)

Co-ordinate traffic (e.g. monitor traffic, and make adjustments for changing conditions, and position waiting vehicles to allow for smooth traffic flow)

Operate radio (e.g. transmit messages concisely and in accordance with operating procedures or best practice)

Clean up (e.g. remove or cover signs and devices sequentially to provide warning to motorists during shutdown)
Course Delivery Method
Part One - Face-to-face theory approximately eight (8) hours: Both a theoretical and a simulated practical component.
Part Two - Industry placement at roadwork site. Participants must complete a minimum of 20 hours of practical experience at a roadwork site under the direct supervision of an experienced accredited traffic controller.
Pricing
For Individuals wanting to gain a traffic controllers licence: The cost of this course includes eight (8) hour course, supply of personal protective equipment (PPE), placement with a traffic control company to complete the mandatory twenty (20) hour logbook and on-the-job assessment $630.00.
For employers wanting their staff to gain a traffic controllers licence: The cost of this course includes eight (8) hour course and on-the-job assessment after logbook completion. Employer to organise placement to complete the mandatory twenty (20) hour logbook $420.00. Contact the office for more information and to enrol.
